Dilemma on Thanksgiving Day

I've just recently discovered that NBC is planning on showing Miracle on 34th Street at 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time on Thanksgiving Day. Now do you understand my Dilemma?

I'm not one of those guys who watches Chevy Chase and Steve Martin movies on Thanksgiving or Christmas. I just never really cared much for The Three Amigos go to Las Vegas.

However, Miracle on 34th Street is one of my all time favorite movies, and I own it on 8 track, vinyl, cassette, VHS, Beta Max, DVD, and HD DVD. It may also interest you to know that I watch it at least once or twice during months that are not traditionally associated with Thanksgiving, like February for example. Some People eat chocolate and other people kill themselves during the month of February.

So here's the dilemma: Along with cooking. eating and spending quality time with loved ones, I'll also be watching TV on Thursday and lots of it! There's a parade, and three football games to watch in between all of the frolicking. My day was planned out perfectly... But now I have a major mind fuck going on! Do I turn off part of the first game (packers vs Lions) to watch Miracle on NBC?

I think I should. I know I own it and could Tivo it, but I kind of want to watch it along with rest of the nation. Every once in a while I like to watch a television show with commercials. Just to try and remember what it was like for my parents, parents, parents. So what would you do? Help me, I'm lost...

Please Note: Corky's log does not close for the holidays. Ever. As a matter of fact, it's a place that you can come and write about whatever you want or need to write about . So make sure to come back on Wednesday to find out what we have planned for the long holiday weekend. Can you smell what the Captain's cooking? ;)

No max update :(

You mean you don't watch the Lions game on Thanksgiving? That's OK, we usually don't either.

I just can't wait for Turkey and cornbread stuffing. And then hitting the bar after that for a few long islands and to shoot some pool. Family traditions...

Lola Starr said...

You should totally turn off football to watch it! Sounds great! :)

I'll be sure to be here on Wednesday. I think you should watch it on Wednesday and Friday and during commercials on Thursday. Yeah, that's it! What a brilliant idea.

Rockdog: Awesome! What time should we make happy hour on Thursday? Maybe all day... ;)

Crashie: Mashed Potatoes with lots of milk, butter, salt and pepper. My contribution to every holiday event and my favorite food on this planet second only to rice. :)

Eric1313: I can't wait to have four days off! This is the first time in 7 years I get the day after Thanksgiving off. I think I'll do some drinking Thursday night. ;)

Karma: I just may, but only for a couple of hours. Football must shown on Thanksgiving!

Cheryl: LOL! That is a brilliant Idea. And while I'm at work I'll read the screen play. ;)

CRUSTY MOM-E said...

Yeah, what Cheryl Said! And I'm sooo glad that you informed me that it's on..that is the one old happy flick that I could watch over and over again...
Crushes on the hot Macy's man!) :)

Hmm,..you could tivo it but watch it on thursday with Max and express to everyone the newest tradition that you are setting for your little guy...after all, you do have to start them young.

Always,
Crusty~

WHy oh why can't the damn bears win?
Get rid of Turner!

Well, I say watch the football game. Miracle will be on 836 more times times during the Holiday season.

By Thursday afternoon I will have had enough of all that family shit. So I'll be here for the weekend too.

You're cooking!? Who cares what's on TV...let's eat! ; ) If someone else cooks...they can have the remote. Watch whatever you want Captain!

i have to vote with karma lennon. watch it and you can always click during the fifteen minute commercial breaks to your football, dude.

i don't care what they say about you. you are a really sentimental guy.

dilling said...

If there is a parade and three football games on, is the NATION really going to be watching Miracle on 34th Street? If you think it will be, maybe another television is what is called for....

Crustbeef: Exactly! I already have Max watching 8 hours of television. How else will be come a TV Prodigy like his dad if he doesn't start watching now? ;)

Jay: Good Point! Football's more than half over... But If I here one more thing about the Patriots I may shoot myself.

Real Live Lesbian: I always make my master creation, Mashed Potatoes. Maybe I'll post a pic of it this year. I bet you can't wait. ;)

Dawn: Please don't tell anyone about that sentimental ting. If that get's out... ;)

Dilling: Parade starts at 9:30 and ends at 12:00 Game 1 start between 12:00 and 12:30. Miracle starts at 2:00 and goes to 4:00 Game 2 Starts between 3:30 and 4:00. Game 3 is on the NFL Network and since one of the teams playing in that game are the colts. Game 3 is mandatory.

So people that don't like football might want to tune in to Miracle at 2:00. I'm sure there will be other shows on other channels, but too me those other channels don't exist on Thanksgiving. ;)

Most of the nation will be watching giants on steroids grind each other into the mud. I say watch the game and Tivo the schmaltz.

I’ve been working more and more on the development of my “professional” photography business, trying to learn the technical stuff I should know, developing a line of postcards and greeting cards, and trying to get organized. As a result, blogging has been on the back burner.

I think of you, now and then sneak a quick look at your blog and what’s happening in your life, but for the most part I haven’t been doing a lot of reading or commenting. It’s probably time for me to take a break and come back when I can spend reasonable time visiting as well as writing.

Thank you for sharing glimpses of your life with me, have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and I hope to “see you” soon!

Ask yourself...do you think the rest of the nation cares if you see The Miracle with them, or not?

Well I knew I smelled something - I thought it was your socks - but now I know its just Corky cooking!

Happy Turkey dad dude!

I think you should flip between the football game & the movie, leaning more heavily toward the movie. After all, it's only packers & lions. Unless you're actually a fan of one of those teams, are you really going to want to watch the ENTIRE game?

love the film, but how can you watch it with adverts in it they drive me crazy!!!!!!
love mashed potatoes(spuds) and instead of milk i put fresh cream in them mmmmmm!
and poor birdman being labeled as one of those guys, well i am one of those guys to, love a comedy, oops should i have admited that to you LOL

fiwa said...

Watch the movie! Thanks, I didn't know it was going to be on. Miracle on 34th street is one of my favorites too. Watcha cooking for wed. dinner?

Anonymous said...

Solution! Move to the correct time zone.

Oh, and I forgot to ask you how you enjoyed the Chiefs/Colts game. Chiefs really made the Colts work for their win eh? I was not expecting that! In the end, as a Broncos fan who needed the Chiefs to lose yesterday, I am glad the Colts pulled it out . . . now if only Denver can keep up their end of the bargain tonight!

That is the greatest contrast ever, Corky, which I think explains why you are so great- football or a movie about Santa!

Big Pissy said...

...for me it's all about the Macy's parade.

I LOVE it!

Aunt Jackie said...

LOL! Well Aunt Jackie's Forrest doesn't close for the holidays either, especially during NaBloPoMo. So anyone feeling like it, come by! And Corky, I'll be here too. Keep me a place setting open. ;)

I might even watch TV on Thursday, too.... imagine that!

furiousBall said...

just as long as you don't watch that puppy bowl on the animal channel... although it is funny when one of them poops on the field

well, i would say to boycott the movie altogether in favor of the game, or anything else really . . . but you know my feelings on that wonderful holiday classic :) Have a great turkey day and say hi to your wife and son for me.

Karen Jensen said...

I hope that Miracle doesn't conflict with the dog show!

I definitely would go for the Miracle! What better way to get in the spirit? But then again, I know at least one of the tvs in our house will have football on.

nikki said...

Dude there is NO way that that movie could be better than ANY football game. I would watch two teams I can't stand before watching that movie. Seriously, I just don't enjoy that movie. BUT, it's my mom's fave. She may try to kick us off the tv. We'll see.

Enemy of the Republic said...

Hell, I'll stop by--you are my geographical neighbor.

Watch the movie, then during commercials, check out the game.

Gina said...

I would not watch the movie, just because I owned so many trillions of versions of it. You, I mean, not me. I don't own any versions of it.

Jets vs Raiders
65 seconds left in the game
Raiders scored 14 points to win 43-32
MILLIONS of people watching the game missed it because NBC cut off the game to stay on schedule and began running "Heidi"

As a Detroit Lions fan, I hope Miracle on 34th Street is on a different network.

you have so many issues.

Watch Christmas Vacation as soon as Thanksgiving is done and get over it!

You can watch tv like I do and go back and forth between the packers game and Miracle on commercials. Then you never feel like you are missing something.

Bonnie Blue said...

I've got no advice for this one. I'll be cooking all day so I don't really get to see tv but I know how it is when a favorite movie is on. I'm like that with Gone With the Wind.

Mashed taters are always a good thing. Fed ex me some. Thanks. ;)

Burfica said...

packers vs. lions??? ewwwwww yeah I would miss it. hehehehehe

Wizened Wizard: Take care and I hope you do well with your Photography business! Enjoy.

Leslie: That's just it... I have to de the caring for them. ;)

Pink: Thanks Pink! Are you going to watch the parade and reminisce? ;)

Emmeline: I'm not a fan of either teams, but how can anyone not like Brett Favre?

However, I'm a much bigger fan of Maureen O'Hara's. ;)

Her Indoors: I'll definitely be posting a pic of my master creation at some point this weekend. And I still love you even though you like the Birdman better. ;)

captain corky said...

Fiwa: I'm not sure what we're going to eat for dinner on Wednesday. That's a lot to think about. ;)

Maddy: Done. ;)

Emmeline: Denver played well last night. We really enjoyed the game and there were lot of Chief fans at the game. It's a 6 hour ride from KC to Indy. Not too bad.

Princess: Thank you. I'm blushing now. :)

Pissy: I love it too, and Max will make sure I'm wide awake for it. ;)

captain corky said...

Aunt Jackie: Absolutely and I'll be checking you out too. Er... I mean checking out your blog. ;)

Beader: You better check to make sure it still works. ;)

Furiousball: I don't get that channel. I've requested from my cable company that they give me five different hunting and fishing channels instead.

Erika: I look forward to watching Miracle, Star Wars, and It's a Wonderful Life with you someday. ;)

Professor J: Will the Dog show be over by 2:00 PM?

PS Welcome!

captain corky said...

Gawilli: It definitely is great way to start the holiday off right!

Nikki: Your mom has impecible taste! (Shaking my finger at you) You should be more like your mother Nikki. ;)

Enemy: You're always welcome. ;)

Gina: Maybe that's what your husband should get you for Christmas. I'll have a talk with him. ;)

Nancy: Ah... The Heidi Bowl. It was before my time, but being from the New York area, I've heard about it many, many times.

captain corky said...

Birdman: Since it's two NFC teams I probably could handle that, but that kind of behavior generally drives me nuts, unless I'm by myself.

Bonnie Blue: We're going to be doing some cooking too, but I'll have the TV on as back round noise all day long. Are you going to post pics of your food?

Burfica: The Lions are decent this year and the Packers are one of the best teams in the NFL. But still, I see your point. ;)

Casdok: It aint easy sister. ;)

Michael Colvin said...

Get two TV's. You know you want to ;)

jAMiE said...

Picture in picture? Do they still have that..i used to have a tv with that and it was fun... you'll figure it out, i believe in you!

Molly said...

Ah Captain Corky, Believer in Santa Claus and all other personas wise and wonderful,

I understand the dilemma. My favorite is Its a Wonderful Life. My daughter-in-law does own the DVD, and we have enjoyed watching this on television with our family. Yet, I do enjoy watching the broadcast with the rest of America. I am sure that you will resolve this issue in some clever superhuman way.

Anonymous said...

Oh please, watch the movie instead of the Lions game. This is the LIONS we're talking about. You know they are going to lose.

Metal Mark said...

Thursday's games have major implications as to who may earn the right to go and get smacked by the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Leighann said...

I've never EVER watched Miracle on 34th OR It's A Wonderful Life.... does that make me some sort of sinner?? ;)

I watch TV with ads sometimes too, just for a laugh. It's funny to think of all the people who do it every day! :D

G'day Cap'n,

It's Wednesday here in Australia, so can you please reveal your plans to me - before you reveal them to anyone else?

Yes, I can smell what you're cooking. I think it's an Aussie-style barbecue. I'll come round there in about ten minutes if I'm right!

Thank you very much for your kind acknowledgement a few days ago on what I do with Post of the Day and how you think it's a ``cool'' concept.

Mate, you and I are alike - authorblog, like your Log, never closes. Why close when you're having fun?

Cheers

That little Natalie Wood was so darned cute!

Try to catch as much as you can, but remember that this is Max's first Thanksgiving and he needs someone to show him how to eat way too much food and then lay around on the couch. Please keep your hands off of your crouch while company is there!

Heidi the Hick said...

Watch the movie, and commune with everybody else who's watching it while you are unaware of who else is watching it. HUh?

You can always channel flip during commercials, not? That's what guys do right?

Jo said...

Captain Corky, I think your gut instinct is telling you to watch the movie. That's like me with Alistair Sims "A Christmas Carol" at Christmas time. No matter what I'm doing, I have to watch it.

Do you have a remote control? If "Miracle on 34th Street" has commercials, then flip back and forth. Or you could do some intergalactic time-warp thing, and turn back the clock after you have watched it, and then watch football. :-) You are the Captain of the Enterprise, aren't you?

DJ Kirkby said...

You cooking a Turduken by any chance?

captain corky said...

Tod: I want the world! I want the whole world! It's my bar of chocolate, give it to me NOW!

Jamie: Hey... Maybe I'll to watch it at a department store. Now that's an idea. ;)

MJD: Thank you for having confidence in me fine citizen. ;)

Nikki: I know... but I've kind of grown accustom to watching them lose. Makes my turkey go down smoother. ;)

Metal Mark: I would give my left arm for them to make it to the AFC Championship game and then loose to the ANYBODY. LOL

captain corky said...

Leighann: Welcome to the Log. Any fan of Wonder Woman is welcome here and I forgive you for your sins. ;)

Guilty: Yeah, I couldn't do it all the time. I can get so many more shows in a week now. ;)

Dr. Kenneth Noisewater: Unfortunately no...

David: Exactly my friend! I really enjoy all the relationships I've formed through this blog, and don't tell anyone but I also like writing from time to time.

Jessica: You too. ;)

captain corky said...

Flake: It's one of the best!

Nikki: As long as he likes you that's all that counts. ;)

Ashley: I'll do my best but I have a real hard time controlling my hand. ;)

Heidi: I don't really flip unless I'm alone, cause it pisses me off when other people do it.

Josie: I like that version, but that's one movie I can watch with any cast. I have Patrick Stewart's version on VHS and watch it every year.

captain corky said...

DJ Kirkby: Welcome!

No, but it sounds good. I like meat stuffed with meat. LOL
